Mercury Man 03:41
Long ago and somewhere far away Another time another place There came a special man A message in his hand To save us in the end Here he comes again As fast as he can So baby Don't be a fool Don't be afraid He's come to stay Mercury man He's breaking the sound barrier, too Mercury man Across the universe A world away At the speed of light he came Falling from the sky Beyond the great divide To show us all the way Flew in from mercury With wings upon his feet So baby Don't be a fool Don't be afraid He's come to stay Mercury man He's breaking the sound barrier, too Mercury man Deep in the quiet The deafening silence Floating all alone in space See how he's crying So tired of trying Every time to save the day Here he comes again As fast as he can So baby Don't be a fool Don't be afraid He's come to stay Mercury man He's breaking the sound barrier, too Mercury man c. 2016 Butch Young BMI

Persephone 03:36
Goddess of the underworld Mistress of the afterlife As Persephone Gathered flowers Hades intervened To drag her downward When he opened up the earth Persephone was swallowed And such remained her curse As witnessed by Apollo Oh oh oh oh Persephone Oh oh oh oh What's left for What's left for me? Goddess of the underworld Mistress of the afterlife Demeter roamed the land To find her daughter She did not understand Where Hades brought her And she searched relentlessly Till a fountain filled her spirit And she cried: "Persephone" Who alas, could never hear it Oh oh oh oh Persephone Oh oh oh oh What's left for What's left for me? Goddess of the underworld Mistress of the afterlife Come Spring she'd be set free Winter remanded He fed Persephone A pomegranate Goddess of the underworld Mistress of the afterlife c. 2016 Butch Young BMI

One Foot In 03:26
This simple kind of life Take not for granted You can do with it what you like As is your habit Sell you soul Or trade your wife Turn the screw or twist the knife Well come on, let's have it One foot in and one foot out One foot firmly in your mouth You talkin' to me? I'm talkin' to you We can keep talkin' till we're blue This silent beam of light Is not so magic Though only seen at night There's one advantage Watch the galaxies explode Tell the children they'll get old That's right, God damn it One foot in and one foot out One foot firmly in your mouth You talkin' to me? I'm talkin' to you We can keep talkin' till we're blue This stupid little life Is not so tragic Though we'll never get out alive It's one rich pageant Tell the author of the sun To construct another one Let's get right to it One foot in and one foot out One foot firmly in your mouth You talkin' to me? I'm talkin' to you We can keep talkin' till we're blue c. Butch Young BMI

Dime Store Jesus is Stifling his sneezes Worn-out waitress Addressed him with her Blessings and her sins I am, you might recall Your lord & master No one you'll ever find Could bless you better Tent show revivals are Thumping on their bibles Gas station seekers Arrive to hear him speak And speak The Word I am, you might recall Your lord & master The one you trust to tell Just what's the matter Son Only son Only son Son Dime Store Jesus Time you leave us I am the chosen one Your lord and master Sidewalk Caesar Relieved of all his seizures Renders to Jesus A dime and nothing more To catch the bus There goes, you might recall Your lord & master Dime Store Jesus has Arrived to save us Son Only son Only son Son c. 2016 Butch Young BMI

It's a story line As old as time Wanting a love That can't be mine Even the sun Needs a reason Sometimes to come out and shine The Fools of May Are coming on to play To play The Fools of May Jumped up upon the stage Like their saddest song When you were young Made you want to sing along The Man in the Moon Is pining for you When he feels alone the dark The Fools of May Are coming on to play To play The Fools of May Jumped up upon the stage Sometimes you can'y help feeling Like the foolish one Nobody loves you, honey Like a fool in love Now it's time to go Play your role In your slow-mo picture show Look how the stars Are finding it hard Tonight to summon a spark The Fools of May Are warming up the stage The stage The Fools of May c. 2016 Butch Young BMI

On the battlefields of home Wherever you may roam I hope you’ll always know You still have a place to go Do you remember That time you fell upon your face Trying to fly into space? You couldn’t wait Little Child of Nature Flying high as the sky will take her Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh On the autumn leaves of gold Or winter’s silver throne She lives out in the wild I miss this nature’s child Do you remember That time we flipped into the lake Just as the moon was taking shape? It fascinates little Child of Nature Let’s celebrate whoever is her maker Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Do you remember When you would run out in the rain Letting it fall upon your face? You loved the taste, little Child of Nature You went away, little Child of Nature Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh c. 2016 Butch Young BMI

Who’ll be there Turning wider down that crowded thoroughfare? We’re all waiting just for you 'Cause you’re always slowin’ down Though you’re only passin’ through Hey, Mr. Sunday Driver We’re in a hurry when the workday’s done, yeah Hey, Mr. Sunday Driver Was the sun in your eyes? Or are you awake? You're riding the break, man How I fear Once my coffee’s cold I'll still be waiting here with a smile I’ve got better things to do Than to wait behind a man Who’s admiring the view Hey, Mr. Sunday Driver We’re in a hurry when the weekend comes Hey, Mr. Sunday Driver Was the sun in your eyes or Are you awake? Move out of the way, man Time out for a couple of years He’s turning wider So slow he’s grinding the gears This Sunday Driver 'Cause you’re always slowin’ down Though you’re only passin’ through Hey, Mr. Sunday Driver We’re in a hurry when the workday’s done Hey, Mr. Sunday Driver Was the sun in your eyes Or are you awake? You're riding the break, man c. 2016 Butch Young BMI

It was a quarter to eight When we tried to escape Through a hole in the ceiling We're molecular cells Deconstructing ourselves And the truth is revealing Where do we go from here? Segueing into some unseen dimension And doing away with our fears Do you feel like Mohammed on top of the mountain? Ponce de Leon in search of his Fountain Of Youth eternally? By nine-forty-five We were barely alive Among all we'd ingested Many drinks were imbibed In a mid-Soho dive Where we both got arrested Where are they taking us, dear? Down to a cell in the House of Detention Closing our eyes and our ears Do you feel like Mohammed on top of the mountain? Ponce de Leon in search of his Fountain Of Youth eternally? I don't care what you say I don't care what you do All I know is that I love you When you're swimming in my vein All my worries slip away Yes I must admit I want to In the following days We emerged from our haze And regained all our senses Though it gave us a fright Maybe such is the price Of the height of transcendence Where do we go from here? And can we get back If it's too much adventure? Learning to swallow our fears Do you feel like Mohammed on top of the mountain? Ponce de Leon in search of his Fountain Of Youth eternally c. 2016 Butch Young BMI

Algernon 03:47
I didn't want to speak with you It's driving time for the things you do I fell in love, but so what? Now I feel down in the dumps Oh, oh, oh, oh Oh, oh, oh, oh Oh, oh, that is love Algernon I was writing on the company wall I was searching for the truth of it all Algernon I couldn't stand to wait for you I hung up and you did, too Now I wish you were here Just one thing I'd tell you dear: Oh, oh, oh, oh Oh, oh, oh, oh Oh, that is love Algernon You're killing me with all your carrying on You can't expect that we would always be young Algernon I tell you pretty baby Come back to me my lady Oh, oh, oh, oh Oh, oh, oh, oh That is love Algernon I was writing on the company wall I was searching for the truth of it all Algernon Algernon You're killing me with all your carrying on You can't expect that we would always be young Algernon c. 2016 Butch Young BMI

Asteroid 04:27
Riding on my asteroid With the one I love Coming down for oxygen Gets so tough Soaking up the starlight Of a distant sun Gone in the morning When I wake up You sold me your sunny skies You chased the clouds To make it clearer Lightning cracked it open wide And now the storm is that much nearer I saw you at the station A travel reservation Made out just for one Does your imagination Carry you to places Or are you on the run? Dropping through the atmosphere Plummeting to earth Hope you had fun for what it's worth Falling out of orbit With the ones you love All the world around you revolves While you were getting high Someone had to make a living It's no use and no surprise You take and take But there's no giving I saw you at the station A travel reservation Made out just for one Does your imagination Carry you to places Or are you on the run? While you were getting high No one checked the children's fever And now you act surprised At what you're finding in the mirror I saw you at the station A travel reservation Made out just for one Does your imagination Carry you to places Or are you on the run? Will you ever learn, Asteroid? You gotta come back to earth

So I'll just stumble on my way From the cradle to the grave Though I never seem to notice what Is holy now Holy cow It's a wonderful life A wonderful day And we can all come out to play Yeah, we're coming to life We're coming today And love will always find a way So what If the world just blows away Leaves us lonely in it's wake Would we ever stop to notice that It's over now? Oh, and how It's a wonderful life A wonderful day And we can all come out to play Yeah, we're coming to life We're coming today And love will always find a way It's a wonderful life A wonderful day And we can all come out to play Yeah, we're coming to life We're coming today And love will always find a way c. 2016 Butch Young BMI

Starlight, star bright Shine upon the earth With promise of rebirth 'Cause stars that die Still will shine Long afterward Oh how I long to see them shine And hear their song one more time Look to the western sky For a starlit lullaby Moonlight, tonight Glows upon the ocean Stirs emotion And the melody By the ocean breeze Plays in reverse Then with a beauty beyond words The mermaid sing: La la la la la la Look to the western sky For a starlit lullaby Lullaby Starlit lullaby Bye bye bye bye bye bye bye Oh my love This is our goodbye Bye bye bye bye bye bye bye Oh my love Don't turn out the light Light years from here A star that's barely blinking Mutely winking Sputters out her song So sing along Chime in the verse All of the birds In the universe are singing: La la la la la Look to the western sky For a starlit lullaby Lullaby Starlit lullaby c. 2016 Butch Young BMI

REVIEWS:

"Mercury Man is one of the most solid, cohesive pieces to come into my consciousness and it’s an instant guide for how to write a bold, brilliant pop song. Except he delivers twelve of them. Saying they’re Beatlesque may sound overplayed but just with the two opening stunners, “Mercury Man” and “Persephone”, these are glorious post-’68 pieces of orchestrated brilliance – a little Lennon and a little Harrison. He brings us into familiar territory but he’s his own artist and he obviously has the gifted ear and pen. “One Foot In” sounds like a collaboration between McCartney and Brian Wilson – love the “ba ba ba ba”‘s – and “Dime Store Jesus” is a beautiful melding of Harry Nilsson with just a smattering of Todd Rundgren. The jauntiness of “Sunday Driver” is ripe with delicious horn charts and a “Penny Lane”-like tempo; “Wonderful Life” is sheer pop joy and perfection with positivity and joy and “Child Of Nature” follows the same thread of warmth and melody."

"His songs are impossibly catchy, and bear the influence of ELO, Klaatu, Magical Mystery Tour Beatles, and so on."

"Never, never, never tell us that the album is a goner. Butch Young’s miraculous, hall-of-fame-worthy Mercury Man instantly announces itself as one of the best albums of 2016 with its dazzling array of 1970s-styled instant classics, peppered with a mix of Paul McCartney and Harry Nilsson-esque magic. Every one of these Los Angeles-based artist’s songs is a clear winner. We’re playing all of them in rotation: the title track, “Persephone,” “One Foot In,” “Dime Store Jesus,” “The Fools of May,” “Child of Nature,” “Sunday Driver,” “Mohammed on Top of the Mountain,” “Algernon,” “Asteroid,” “Wonderful Life,” and “Starlit Lullaby.” Astounding and really terrific.

"It's no wonder so many pop critics are behind this one. Twelve magical cuts including "Mercury Man," "One Foot In," "Asteroid," and "Wonderful Life. If you love the sound of artists like Badfinger, The Beatles, Neil Innes, Stackridge, and Mitch Easter, you'll most likely find Butch Young's sound to be familiar and strangely inviting."

"There are some great songs here. The title track has a very 1970s Beatle-influenced sound, a time when so many bands like Badfinger and ELO continued updating the style of the masters."

"In each listening "Mercury Man" is a constant discovery, an essential work that leaves astonished and surprised. Elegant Power pop and of a high level, with moments of dream and baroque pop, detailed care and work, reminiscent of the genius of Brian Wilson, The Beach Boys."

A potent grasp of power pop dynamics viz. infectious melodies, Beatlesque instrumentation and a telepathic sensibility for 70s pop-rock. For power pop fans, this is an album you will want to listen in its entirety."
